Cetona in Fiore

Bico is a type of flatbread kneaded by hand and its humble beginnings with recipes handed down through generations is celebrated in Piazze.

Palio Horse Race, Siena
The most famous festival in Tuscany that happens twice a year in July and August, the Palio horse races around the Piazza del Campo, a competition between 10 teams representing the city’s 17 wards or contradas, have been in place for 900 years. Pick a color and cheer!

Festival dei Due Mondi, Spoleto
An annual summer music and opera festival founded by composer Gian Carlo Menotti with the intent to strengthen the ties of both American and European cultures, hence the two worlds. Famous people who have participated include Rudolf Nureyev, Luciano Pavarotti and Al Pacino.

Bravio delle Botti, Montepulciano
As Montepulciano is known for its wine, its festival is of course vino centric. Competitors from the different districts race to push an 80 kg barrel up the steep streets of this medieval city. They will need a lot of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo after that race!

Cheese Game, Pienza
Gioco del Caio al Fuso or the Cheese Game celebrated in the Pio II Square in Pienza on the first September weekend, when players of each district roll their famous Pecorino cheese around a wooden spindle. You can try variations of Pecorino in the various food stalls.

Paper Lanterns Festival, Florence
Elaborately shaped and coloured lanterns are carried by children in the streets of Florence, in homage to medieval peasants that would carry lanterns into the city to camp and sell their wares the next day, the Feast of the Birth of the Virgin Mary

Umbria Winter Jazz Festival, Orvieto
The Winter Jazz Festival in Orvieto is world renowned, having hosted music legends such as Miles Davis, B.B. King, Santana, Elton John and Sting. You never know who you will rub shoulders with when you attend.

Corsa delle Broche
A fun and traditional contest that begins with a parade followed by a women’s race with participants carry pitchers on their heads around the Piazza Garibaldi, followed by a men’s race where they carry heavy containers in a relay

Bico Festival
A celebration of the local flatbread called schiacciata that takes place in the Central Piazza during the last weekend of June and the first weekend of July
